Supporting Mental Health and Wellbeing

At Our Lady of Pity RC Primary School the importance of good mental health is actively taught through all areas of the curriculum. In daily teaching children are encouraged to reflect on their own emotions and the curriculum is designed with activity and exercise in mind.

Children and young people’s mental health is regularly in the headlines and gaining momentum on the national agenda.   We want to help children and families who may be struggling with their mental health.

Emotional Literacy Support

In school, we are fortunate to have a trained Emotional Literacy Support assistant in Mrs Withinshaw.  She is able to offer emotional literacy sessions which support children in understanding their emotions.

There will always be children and young people in schools facing life challenges that detract from their ability to engage with learning. Some will require greater support to increase their emotional literacy than others. ELSA is an initiative developed and supported by educational psychologists.

It recognises that children learn better and are happier in school if their emotional needs are also addressed.

Ideas and advice

This page contains ideas and helpful advice on how you can help your child; for example in areas such as empathy, self-esteem or calming techniques.

  • Mindfulness is a great way to help anxious child.  A great resource to support this is Cosmic Kids Zen Den on YouTube.

Useful books

We will be adding interesting articles and book titles that help explain mental health and techniques to help.
