School of Sanctuary

We are extremely proud to be a School of Sanctuary.

Our Lady of Pity RC Primary School is a school that is committed to being a safe and welcoming place for those seeking sanctuary. It is a space for those whose lives were in danger in their own country, who have troubles at home or are just looking for a space where they can feel safe. Being a School of Sanctuary means that we are a school that helps its students, staff and wider community understand what it means to be seeking sanctuary and to extend a welcome to everyone as equal, valued members of the school community. Our Lady of Pity RC Primary School is proud to be a place of safety and inclusion for all.

A School of Sanctuary is not just about asylum seekers and refugees. We create a safe environment that includes everybody in school, regardless of where people come from or what they look like. We want to live in a country where no child fears bullying.

How did we become a School of Sanctuary?

There are three simple principles to being a School of Sanctuary:

1.We learnt about what it means to be seeking sanctuary.

2.We took positive action to embed concepts of welcome, safety and inclusion within our school and the wider community.

3. We shared our vision and achievements.

Our Lady of Pity RC Primary School:

· Promotes positive attitudes within the school and community around people seeking sanctuary.

· Takes positive steps and is proud of being a place of safety and inclusion for all.

· Recognises and celebrates that we are committed to welcoming and supporting people seeking sanctuary.
